(In case you didn't guess, this initial flurry of posts is mostly for my benefit so I can establish what I need to work on in the next few weeks. But hopefully they will whet some appetites too.)
I organized an artist trading card (ATC) event at Sixth Street Gallery on November 19th. We provided all sorts of supplies for making ATCs as well as work space and snacks. The broad purpose of the event was to introduce people to ATCs, build community, and provide an opportunity to make quick, low pressure art. (As someone who has spent a lot of time in art school, I sometimes find myself feeling like unless something has some deep, serious meaning, it can't be "real" art. I still love good conceptual art, but sometimes it's nice to just have fun.) The more specific purpose was for any women artists who attended to create ATCs to send to Sister Trading Cards. I still have the cards at home, waiting to be sent off (another project for January), and before I send them I will post some photos on here.
I've been a member of postcrossing.com for a few months and I am so into it. I'll let you read for yourself at their site about how the whole thing works, but suffice it to say I've received a few dozen postcards from all over and had fun writing to others. I am impressed with how well though out and fair their system is. The only downside is that it seems like the vast majority of members are from Finland. Not that there's anything wrong with Finland, but I was looking forward to sending to and receiving from a more diverse selection of countries. On the whole, though, I still recommend joining if you have an interest in that sort of thing.
In my postcrossing profile I have specifically requested handmade cards. Granted, I don't often get a handmade card, but aside from the few I have gotten, people often are thoughtful enough to send a postcard featuring a local artist which I also enjoy. I will be posting some of my favorite handmade or other interesting postcards that I receive - but not until January. I have way too much to do before then.
Welcome! This blog will be a document of mail art I send or receive, ATCs, and anything else creative I think is worth sharing. I am a member of Sixth Street Gallery and will post about happenings there as well.
