This site thinks my blog is written by a man and is quite sure of it. I can assure you that I am not a man and probably will never be one. Oh gender stereotypes, when will you quit?
Anyways, the piece is called pigtails and it's hand-stitched cotton on linen. It's about 4" square and I'm all in love with it. I keep trying to imagine the next stitched piece I'll do, but I have yet to envision the image as clearly as I saw this one. I made it as if it's a medium format photo (Holga, of course) and what I stitched is the scene I would have created had I been photographing.
P.S. I didn't post about this sooner because, not unexpectedly, I misplaced my camera promptly after photographing my art before shipping it off to Georgia. It took me a few weeks to realize this. i look forward to the day when my life has a small amount of order.
I have a cute little trike that I bought November 2007 at the Catlin Gabel Rummage Sale. It was only 50 cents and absolutely perfect. I bought it in anticipation of Pedalpalooza 2008 and the Great Tricycle Race. However, I have also come to love it as a photographic subject.
First off, I found that combining my love of my chickens with the trike was a winner. These were taken hastily, and are not the most artistic photos ever, but they delight me.
...and then after its demise. (Lots of over-enthusiastic big kids and adults + small old trike = inevitable breakage.)
Although it is now less-than-useful as a mode of transport (although not totally useless...plus I fantasize of fixing it some day), it is still a beloved photo model. I have a lovely slide and accompanying Polaroid transfer, however, my lack of scanner (and lack of organization) mean that you will not be seeing that image anytime soon. Sorry. But here is the latest photo, faithful old trike sitting in the recent snow.
My muse, the trike.
I know that New Year's Day is, when it comes down to it, an arbitrary Western cultural construct. However, it just so happens to come at an appropriate time for me to start fresh and shed the frustrations of this past year. I am horrified that this blog has become a stand in for a therapist. I also hate that it's all words and no images. Boring!
In general, I hope to return to some art making and not just gallery management in this coming year. On the plus side of that, I just got into a show in Savannah, GA and have been offered a solo show at a local gallery. On the minus side, I am artistic director for at least two shows at my gallery this year, plus there's about four other shows in which I will be heavily involved. Hopefully I can just keep the two sides nicely balanced.
I'm not going to make too many promises because I am afraid of not keeping them, but here's to hoping that 2009 is peachy keen and art-o-licious!
